Avidya: The Root of False Belief

Avidya, or spiritual ignorance, is the fundamental misperception that generates false beliefs; recognizing it is essential for authentic belief transformation.

Why It Matters

Avidya, translated as ignorance or misperception, is identified in the Yoga Sutras as the root cause of all suffering and false belief. It is not mere lack of knowledge but active misunderstanding—mistaking the temporary for the permanent, the body for the self, the external for the internal. This foundational confusion generates a cascade of false beliefs that shape our worldview and behavior. By identifying avidya as the source, Patanjali's system provides a diagnostic tool for belief change: false beliefs are symptoms of deeper misperception. To transform beliefs authentically, we must trace them back to their roots in avidya and directly perceive reality as it is, not as we imagine it. This understanding liberates us from compulsive belief patterns.
