Chitta Vritti: Recognizing Attachment Patterns

The yogic concept of mental fluctuations reveals how unconscious attachment patterns repeat, offering pathways to conscious choice.

Why It Matters

Chitta vritti refers to the fluctuations and modifications of consciousness—the recurring thought patterns and emotional reactions that shape behavior. In adult relationships, attachment patterns operate as vritti: recurring, often unconscious cycles. Someone might repeatedly attract unavailable partners, or alternate between clinging and withdrawing, replaying inherited family dynamics. Patanjali's framework teaches that awareness itself is transformative. By observing your attachment patterns without judgment—noticing when you pursue, when you withdraw, when you feel triggered—you create space for choice. The vritti doesn't disappear through denial but through conscious witnessing. This concept invites partners to develop what modern psychology calls metacognition: thinking about your thinking, feeling about your feelings. As you observe the ripples of attachment anxiety or avoidance in real-time, you realize these patterns are not identity but conditioning. This recognition is liberating. You can choose differently. You can respond consciously rather than react habitually, gradually rewiring the relationship templates running beneath awareness.
