Chitta Vritti: Mental Modification Patterns

The five mental modifications that distort emotional perception; understanding these patterns transforms how we recognize and respond to feelings.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's concept of Chitta Vritti identifies five fundamental mental distortions: correct knowledge, misperception, imagination, sleep, and memory. In emotional intelligence, these patterns explain why we misinterpret social cues, create false narratives about relationships, or replay past hurts. By recognizing which vritti is active—am I responding from actual knowledge or imagination?—we develop metacognitive awareness of our emotional reactions. This framework treats emotional intelligence as a systematic knowledge of mind patterns rather than merely feeling better. When we observe our vrittis without judgment, we create space between stimulus and response, the hallmark of emotional maturity.
