Chitta Vritti: Mental Patterns and Attachment

Recognizing and transforming the repetitive thought patterns and emotional loops that drive anxious or avoidant attachment behavior.

Why It Matters

Chitta vritti—the fluctuations or patterns of the mind—form the foundation of Patanjali's entire system. These are the habitual thought loops, emotional reactions, and beliefs that spin automatically without conscious awareness. In attachment dynamics, chitta vritti appear as anxious spirals ('Does he love me?'), avoidant narratives ('I don't need anyone'), or protest behaviors ('I'll push them away first'). Patanjali teaches that suffering arises from identifying with these mental patterns as truth. By observing your chitta vritti without judgment—noticing when you catastrophize, withdraw, or cling—you create space for choice. This practice of witnessing your attachment patterns without acting them out is foundational to transformation. Rather than being unconsciously driven by childhood programming, you become the observer of your mind's conditioning, which is the first step toward genuine change in how you relate.
