Citta Vritti Nirodhah: Clearing Mental Distortions

This core Yoga Sutra formula—stilling the mind's fluctuations—is the direct path to clearing distorted beliefs and accessing true perception.

Why It Matters

Citta vritti nirodhah, the very definition of yoga from Patanjali's opening sutra, means the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. This is not emptiness or blankness, but the settling of mental distortions that cloud clear seeing. Our beliefs are largely shaped by the vritti—the constant mental chatter, reactivity, memory loops, and projection patterns. When these fluctuations quiet, we perceive reality more accurately. Beliefs formed in a turbulent mind tend to be reactive and distorted; beliefs formed in a settled mind tend to be wise and aligned. Through meditation and mindfulness practices aimed at quieting the mind, we naturally release false beliefs. The mind becomes like a clear pond; instead of the ripples of distortion, we see what is actually there. This is why Patanjali emphasizes meditation as the primary tool: by addressing the root disturbance of mental fluctuation, beliefs naturally clarify and transform without forcing.
