Citta Vritti Nirodhah: Stilling the Internal Chatter of Parts

Patanjali's central teaching—stilling the modifications of mind—directly addresses how parts compete for attention and how internal quietness allows the Self to emerge and lead.

Why It Matters

Citta vritti nirodhah—'yoga is the cessation of the modifications of mind'—is Patanjali's foundational definition of yoga and the primary goal of his entire philosophical system. Rather than eliminating parts, this teaching emphasizes quieting the constant mental chatter so we can access a deeper, unified consciousness. When parts constantly compete for expression and control, the mind remains turbulent and the Self remains obscured. Through consistent practice, Patanjali teaches, this internal noise gradually settles, revealing awareness beneath it. In IFS work, this principle manifests as the goal of helping all parts achieve relative calm and cooperation, allowing the Self—the wise, compassionate center—to lead. When parts are at war or desperate for expression, we cannot access Self energy. By creating internal conditions where vritti settle through dialogue, understanding, and part cooperation, practitioners access the quiet groundedness from which authentic healing emerges. This stillness is not numbness but clarity.
