Kleshic Emotions Root Patterns

Understanding the five root afflictions (ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, fear) that generate all emotional suffering.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five fundamental kleshes (afflictions or obstacles) that serve as roots of all psychological suffering and emotional dysregulation: avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego/false identity), raga (attachment/craving), dvesha (aversion/rejection), and abhinivesha (fear of loss). Rather than treating individual emotions as isolated problems, Patanjali's framework reveals their common origins. Depression, anxiety, and rage each stem from misidentification with the body-mind and reactivity to impermanent circumstances. This systems perspective transforms emotional regulation from symptom management to root-cause treatment. When we recognize that our emotional reactivity stems from fundamental misunderstanding—taking the temporary as permanent, the changing as stable—we can address emotions at their source. This framework guides us to examine: What am I refusing to accept? What identity am I defending? What am I afraid of losing? By gently investigating these kleshic patterns rather than merely managing emotional symptoms, we create genuine transformation that unfolds naturally and sustainably.
