Kleshas: The Five Afflictions

Patanjali's psychological framework identifying ignorance, egoism, attachment, aversion, and fear of death as the root causes underlying anxiety's manifestation.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's theory of the kleshas (afflictions or obstacles) provides a sophisticated psychological map. Anxiety, rather than being primary, emerges from these five root patterns: avidya (ignorance of one's true nature), asmita (ego-identification), raga (attachment to pleasure), dvesha (aversion to pain), and abhinivesha (fear of death and annihilation). Modern anxiety often masks these deeper patterns. Surface worry about performance, relationships, or health actually stems from fundamental ignorance about identity and mortality. Asmita makes the ego defend itself frantically. Abhinivesha—the primitive fear of non-existence—drives existential anxiety. This framework is revolutionary for treatment because it shifts focus from symptom management to root-cause transformation. Rather than merely calming panic attacks, Patanjali invites investigation: What ignorance am I operating from? What ego-identity am I defending? What death-fear underlies this anxiety? This diagnostic approach, combined with systematic yoga practice, addresses anxiety's foundation rather than its surface expression, enabling durable psychological transformation rather than temporary relief.
