Klesha Dissolution: Releasing Attachment Obstacles

The five kleshas or mental afflictions—ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, fear—when recognized, can be systematically dissolved for clearer relating.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas (mental afflictions) that obscure clarity: avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death/loss). In adult relationships, these kleshas directly fuel attachment dysfunction. Ignorance about your own patterns keeps them invisible. Ego defensiveness prevents vulnerability. Raga—clinging attachment—creates desperation. Dvesha—aversion—manifests as withdrawal or criticism. Fear of loss drives controlling behavior. This concept provides a diagnostic framework: Which kleshas most distort my relating? Do I cling desperately (raga)? Reject my partner preemptively (dvesha)? Defend my ego through superiority or coldness (asmita)? Once identified, dissolution becomes possible through the yogic path: ethical living, self-awareness, breath work, and meditation. Each practice chips away at the mental afflictions. Partners who recognize their specific klesha patterns can address root causes rather than surface symptoms. Someone whose raga (clinging) stems from deep fear of abandonment might practice vairagya alongside trauma work. Someone whose dvesha (rejection) masks hurt might practice ahimsa toward themselves first. Klesha dissolution leads to relationships based on clarity rather than affliction.
