Why It Matters

The kleshas are the fundamental afflictions or ignorances from which all suffering arises: avidya (ignorance), asmita (egoism), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death). These are not mere emotions but deep patterns that generate protective part structures. When we're unconscious of our true nature (avidya), parts develop rigid strategies. Attachment and aversion create internal conflict: the part that wants connection battles the part that craves safety through isolation. Fear of death manifests as life-protective parts that dominate the system. In Internal Family Systems language, these kleshas are the root conditions from which protective parts and managers emerge. By understanding how these patterns operate in our psyche, we can address the fundamental conditions parts are protecting against rather than merely managing symptoms. Patanjali's framework offers a diagnosis: spiritual ignorance creates fragmentation. Healing involves recognizing these patterns, which allows parts to relax their defensive vigilance. This transforms parts work from surface negotiation to root-level transformation.
