Klesha Awareness: Identifying Suffering Patterns

The five kleshas (afflictions) framework helps ADHD individuals recognize how ignorance, ego, aversion, and clinging create additional suffering beyond the condition itself.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas—fundamental afflictions or sources of suffering: avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego/I-am-ness), raga (attachment/craving), dvesha (aversion/repulsion), and abhinivesha (fear of death/clinging). ADHD magnifies these patterns. Avidya manifests as not understanding your own wiring. Asmita appears as shame-based identity: "I am broken." Raga drives hyperfocus and distraction-chasing. Dvesha creates avoidance of difficult tasks. Abhinivesha shows up as fear of failure or judgment. By mapping these kleshas onto your ADHD experience, you separate the condition from the psychological suffering you layer onto it. This creates choice: you cannot eliminate ADHD, but you can reduce the kleshas' grip through awareness and practice. When you notice "I am avoiding because I fear criticism" (dvesha + asmita), you've identified what's workable. Klesha awareness transforms ADHD from an identity crisis into a constellation of patterns you can skillfully navigate, reducing emotional suffering and improving actual functioning.
