The kleshas—ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, and fear—explain how ADHD suffering often stems not from the neurobiology itself but from misunderstanding and resistance to it.
Patanjali identifies five kleshas or afflictions that cause suffering: avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego or false self), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of loss). For those with ADHD, much suffering arises not from the condition itself but from these mental patterns. Ignorance about your neurobiology leads to shame. Ego resists acknowledging your differences. Attachment to being 'normal' creates constant friction. Aversion to your scattered mind feeds rejection. Fear that you will always struggle perpetuates hopelessness. By identifying these kleshas within your experience, you gain distance and choice. You can acknowledge 'I am believing the story that my ADHD mind is broken' rather than accepting it as absolute truth. This doesn't eliminate ADHD, but it liberates you from the psychological suffering layered onto neurobiological reality. Recognizing the kleshas is the first step toward their gradual dissolution.
