The five kleshas are fundamental emotional afflictions that generate and sustain limiting beliefs; recognizing them unveils the emotional architecture beneath belief systems.
The five kleshas—avidya, asmita, raga, dvesha, and abhinivesha—are the fundamental afflictions or emotional distortions that generate limiting beliefs. Rather than treating beliefs as purely intellectual constructs, Patanjali identifies their emotional substrate. Asmita (ego) generates beliefs about our inadequacy and need for external validation. Raga (attachment) creates beliefs that happiness requires specific outcomes. Dvesha (aversion) generates beliefs that protect us from feared experiences. Abhinivesha (fear of death) creates survival-based beliefs that may no longer be adaptive. By identifying which kleSHA sustains a particular belief, we address root causes rather than surface symptoms. A belief rooted in asmita cannot be changed through logic alone because it's emotionally invested in maintaining ego. Working with the corresponding kleSHA—through practice, breathing, or emotional processing—allows the belief to naturally release. This emotional-somatic approach is why Patanjali's system involves the whole being, not just the intellect, in belief transformation.
