The five kleshas are the root psychological patterns (ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, fear) from which protective parts crystallize and organize themselves.
The kleshas—avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death)—are the five root afflictions that generate all suffering and reactivity. In parts work, each internal part is essentially a response to one or more of these kleshas. A controller part forms around dvesha (aversion to powerlessness) and abhinivesha (fear). An abandoned part forms around raga (attachment to connection and approval). A critical part forms around avidya (ignorance of inherent worth). Understanding that parts are not malfunctioning but rather intelligent responses to these fundamental human challenges transforms our compassion for them. Rather than seeing a part as "broken," we recognize it as attempting to protect the system from the suffering generated by these afflictions. This reframe opens dialogue: we can acknowledge the kleshic pattern the part responds to while exploring whether its strategy still serves us. By helping parts recognize the kleshas they address and develop new responses, we gradually untangle the system from these root afflictions, creating genuine freedom rather than part suppression.
