The five kleshas (ignorance, egoism, attachment, aversion, clinging to life) are the root causes of internal fragmentation and part proliferation.
Patanjali identifies five fundamental afflictions or kleshas that drive all suffering: avidya (ignorance), asmita (egoism), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (clinging to existence). These aren't moral failures but misperceptions that fragment consciousness. Ignorance—not knowing your true nature—leads to the creation of defensive parts. Egoism creates the part that must prove its worth. Attachment spawns parts that cling to what was. Aversion births parts that fight what is. Clinging to existence energizes the part convinced that danger is always imminent. Understanding kleshas explains why parts exist: they're intelligent responses to fundamental misperceptions about reality and safety. In parts work, healing the kleshas means gradually expanding each part's perspective so it understands: you are not fundamentally separate, your worth is intrinsic, impermanence is natural, all experience is workable, and survival is already assured. When parts release the klesha-driven beliefs underlying their role, they naturally relax and reintegrate into the Self's larger wisdom.
