Kleshas: The Five Obstacles Shaping Core Beliefs

The five fundamental mental afflictions that generate and perpetuate limiting beliefs throughout life.

Why It Matters

The kleshas—avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death)—are the root obstacles from which all limiting beliefs sprout. Ignorance (avidya) is the foundational kleesha: the fundamental misunderstanding of reality that generates all other false beliefs. From ignorance springs ego-identification, then attachment to pleasant beliefs and aversion to challenging ones, all bound together by the fear of losing what we believe defines us. Patanjali taught that to transform beliefs, you must address the kleshas because they are the source code generating limiting convictions. A belief in unworthiness stems from avidya and asmita; a belief that you need external validation stems from raga; a belief that criticism destroys you stems from abhinivesha. By recognizing the specific klesha fueling each limiting belief, you can address the root rather than merely changing surface thoughts. Understanding the kleshas is like discovering the operating system behind your belief software.
