Avidya (ignorance) keeps us unaware of our patterns; asmita (ego) makes us defensive and resistant to feedback; raga (attachment) creates compulsive seeking of pleasure through harmful habits; dvesha (aversion) triggers avoidance behaviors and escapism; and abhinivesha (fear of death/change) anchors us to familiar patterns even when they harm us. Understanding these five afflictions is transformative for habit formation because it names the specific psychological mechanisms sabotaging change. Rather than blaming willpower deficit, Patanjali points to these deeper currents. Effective behavior change requires directly addressing the klesha fueling each unwanted habit: Does ignorance obscure consequences? Does ego resistance prevent vulnerability? Is raga creating addictive cravings? Does dvesha drive avoidance? Patanjali teaches that transforming habits requires illuminating and working skillfully with these five obstacles, not simply trying harder through willpower alone.
