Kleshas as Personality Distortions

The five fundamental afflictions (ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, fear) reveal how personality types become distorted through unconscious psychological wounds.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas—afflictions or hindrances—that distort perception and generate suffering: avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death/change). These are not personality features but distortions that obscure true nature. An ENFP dominated by raga becomes addicted to stimulation; a Type 8 by dvesha becomes aggressively defensive; someone high in Conscientiousness by asmita becomes rigid about their identity as "responsible." Understanding personality types through the lens of kleshas reveals their shadow aspects. Each type has characteristic klesha patterns: the Enneagram's fixation is essentially a klesha-based cognitive distortion. By identifying which affliction drives their type behavior, individuals can work directly with these roots rather than merely managing surface traits. This transforms personality development from self-improvement into genuine healing, addressing the existential fears and ignorance that generate compulsive personality patterns, moving toward clarity and authentic selfhood.
