Kleshas: Root Obstacles to Belief Evolution

The five kleshas are fundamental obstacles—ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, and fear—that distort beliefs and prevent authentic transformation; recognizing them dissolves their power.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas (afflictions or obstacles) that create and maintain limiting beliefs: avidya (ignorance), asmita (false ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death). These aren't moral failings but natural patterns of consciousness that distort perception. Avidya—the foundational ignorance—mistakes the temporary for the permanent, the non-self for the Self, the painful for the pleasant. From this ignorance, all limiting beliefs arise. Asmita then crystallizes these beliefs into identity. Raga causes attachment to beliefs that feel good; dvesha causes aversion to beliefs that feel threatening. Abhinivesha—fear of non-existence—makes us cling to familiar beliefs even when they're clearly harmful. Belief transformation requires understanding these five kleshas as they operate in your particular psychology. Which klesha most dominates your limiting beliefs? Do you defend beliefs through ignorance, ego protection, attachment to comfort, aversion to challenge, or fear of change? Recognizing the specific klesha underlying a belief illuminates why it persists and provides the precise leverage point for transformation work.
