Why It Matters

Patanjali's framework of the kleshas—five fundamental afflictions of consciousness—provides political psychology with a diagnostic tool for understanding the roots of political dysfunction. Avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of loss) generate the political behaviors that damage democracies. Voters trapped in ignorance accept propaganda. Leaders consumed by ego pursue power destructively. Citizens attached to winning and averse to losing engage in dehumanizing conflict. Populations gripped by fear become authoritarian. Most political interventions target surface behaviors—policy, rhetoric, institutions—while ignoring these deeper afflictions. Patanjali's wisdom suggests that lasting political transformation requires addressing the kleshas themselves. This doesn't mean eliminating politics for meditation but rather developing the awareness to recognize these patterns in oneself and others. A politically mature person notices their own ignorance, ego, attachments, aversions, and fears, creating distance from their tyranny. Political systems that cultivate such self-awareness in citizens naturally generate more ethical governance.
