Chitta Vritti Nirodhah

The yoga principle of stilling mental fluctuations to achieve clarity and acceptance of what is, foundational to committed action.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's definition of yoga—"chitta vritti nirodhah" (the cessation of mental fluctuations)—directly addresses the ACT principle of acceptance. Rather than fighting intrusive thoughts, this concept teaches that mental clarity arises from observing thoughts without judgment. In commitment practice, this means recognizing that worry, fear, and doubt are natural mental patterns, not obstacles to action. By stilling the vritti (mental waves), practitioners develop the psychological flexibility to hold values and act upon them despite uncomfortable internal experiences. This acceptance of the mind's nature paradoxically enables more committed, value-driven behavior than struggle against our own consciousness.
