In Patanjali's framework, prana is the vital life force that animates mind and body. C-PTSD dysregulates prana: survivors experience breath holding, shallow breathing, or chaotic patterns that perpetually activate the sympathetic nervous system. Pranayama—the conscious regulation of breath—is Patanjali's direct intervention. Specific techniques address different trauma states: lengthened exhalation (extended exhale pranayama) activates the parasympathetic response; alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana) balances hemispheric activation and emotional regulation; ujjayi breathing creates a soothing internal anchor. Unlike pharmaceutical interventions, pranayama gives survivors direct somatic agency. They control the lever that shifts nervous system state. Patanjali teaches that breath is the bridge between conscious will and unconscious physiology. For C-PTSD, where dissociation and disconnection pervade, pranayama reconnects awareness to the body and provides accessible, portable regulation that can interrupt dysregulation in any moment.
