Prarabdha Karma: Belief Consequences from Past Actions

Prarabdha karma represents the results of past actions manifesting now; understanding it reveals how our current beliefs are partly fruit of prior causes beyond immediate control.

Why It Matters

Prarabdha karma is the portion of past karma that has ripened and begun to bear fruit in the present life. It explains why certain beliefs and circumstances seem to arrive unbidden—they are consequences of prior causes set in motion by ourselves or our ancestors. This teaching offers both humility and hope: humility in recognizing that many of our inherited beliefs are not our fault or creation, yet hope because understanding karma's mechanism reveals how change becomes possible. We cannot instantly erase prarabdha karma, but we can change our relationship to it. A belief that seems immutable—fear of poverty, unworthiness, or victimization—may be prarabdha, yet recognizing it as such removes its power to command absolute obedience. We acknowledge the belief while refusing identification with it. Through this conscious non-identification and through new actions generating new karma, we gradually shift the trajectory of our beliefs. Patanjali's teaching on karma emphasizes that while the past cannot be rewritten, the present moment offers freedom to choose differently, plant new seeds, and incrementally transform our belief landscape.
