Prarabdha Karma: Historical Roots of Current Beliefs

The yogic understanding that current beliefs have deep historical and experiential origins that must be acknowledged to be transformed.

Why It Matters

While not explicitly named in the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali's framework implies prarabdha karma—the karmic seeds from our history that bear fruit in our present beliefs and patterns. Your current beliefs did not form in a vacuum; they are rooted in family conditioning, cultural narratives, personal experiences, and accumulated patterns from your past. A child who repeatedly heard criticism may develop the belief I'm not good enough; someone with abandonment experiences may believe relationships are unsafe. These are not illogical—they are logical conclusions drawn from limited data in the past. Transforming such beliefs requires understanding their origins: the prarabdha or historical roots that gave rise to them. Patanjali's teaching invites us to see these patterns with compassion rather than judgment—they were adaptive responses to real circumstances. The transformation begins with acknowledging this history, not fighting or denying it. You cannot change what you do not understand. By recognizing how your beliefs were formed, you create the possibility of choosing whether they still serve you, and deliberately forming new beliefs that reflect your current truth rather than your past wounds.
