Prarabdha Karma: Inherited Belief Patterns

Prarabdha karma describes the pre-existing beliefs and patterns we inherit through family and culture; recognizing these inherited convictions is the first step toward conscious choice.

Why It Matters

Prarabdha karma refers to the karma 'already begun'—the inherited patterns and conditioning we're born into through family, culture, and circumstance. Many of our deepest beliefs about worth, possibility, safety, and belonging are prarabdha karma: absorbed from parents, community narratives, and historical patterns before we developed conscious awareness. Patanjali's framework acknowledges that we don't start our belief work on neutral ground; we inherit grooves of consciousness shaped by forces beyond our control. This perspective is both humbling and liberating: it explains why changing a belief can feel like betraying family legacy or cultural identity, while also clarifying that these patterns aren't immutable. Recognizing prarabdha karma allows compassionate acknowledgment of why we believe what we believe. It transforms blame into understanding. The work then becomes not rejecting inherited beliefs but consciously examining them—deciding which serve current truth and which no longer fit. This framework honors both the power of inheritance and the capacity for conscious evolution.
