Prarabdha Karma: Inherited Belief Patterns

Prarabdha karma describes inherited patterns and predispositions that shape which beliefs we naturally adopt and how resistant they are to change.

Why It Matters

Prarabdha karma refers to the karma that is already active and manifesting in your current life—the predispositions, talents, challenges, and patterns you're born into or develop early. In the context of beliefs, prarabdha explains why some beliefs feel 'natural' or resistant to change: they align with your inherited patterns. Your cultural background, family conditioning, early experiences, and even temperament create a propensity toward certain belief systems. This is not deterministic—prarabdha is not fate—but it describes the field in which your beliefs germinate. Understanding prarabdha brings compassion to belief change work. You're not simply dealing with 'wrong thinking' but with deep karmic patterns that feel legitimate and protective. Patanjali's teaching here is that awareness of these patterns is the first step toward freedom from them. By recognizing which of your beliefs are prarabdha (inherited patterns rather than conscious choices), you can examine them more objectively. You may choose to keep some because they genuinely serve you, but the choice becomes yours rather than automatic.
