Prarabdha Karma: Inherited Belief Patterns

Prarabdha karma represents beliefs and patterns we inherit from family, culture, and past conditioning that shape our current worldview.

Why It Matters

Though prarabdha karma is traditionally understood as karmic seeds activated in this lifetime, it also illuminates how beliefs are inherited. We are born into belief-systems we did not choose: family narratives, cultural values, ancestral patterns, and societal norms. These form the substrate of our early beliefs before conscious choice enters. Patanjali's framework acknowledges this reality; we do not begin belief formation in a vacuum. Understanding prarabdha karma—our inherited conditioning—is crucial for belief transformation because it helps us distinguish between beliefs we actively chose and those we absorbed unconsciously. By recognizing the source of our beliefs, we gain agency. We can honor the wisdom in our inheritance while consciously revising beliefs that no longer align with our mature understanding. This non-blaming acknowledgment of our starting point is essential; we cannot transform what we do not first clearly see.
