Pratyahara, the fifth limb of yoga in Patanjali's system, represents the conscious withdrawal of the senses from external objects. This practice directly regulates the nervous system by interrupting the automatic reactive cycle where sensory input triggers stress responses. When we withdraw our sensory focus from overstimulating environments—constant notifications, visual chaos, noise—we give the parasympathetic nervous system permission to engage. Patanjali understood that the mind follows the senses; when senses are calm and internalized, the mind naturally settles. In modern nervous system regulation, pratyahara teaches us to consciously manage sensory input rather than remain passively overwhelmed. This might involve reducing screen time, creating quiet spaces, or practicing deliberate sensory fasting, allowing the nervous system to recalibrate toward baseline equilibrium.
