Pratyaksha means direct perception or immediate sensory awareness unmediated by mental interpretation. While our biased minds constantly filter and distort sensory input through past conditioning, pratyaksha practice trains us to perceive with increasing clarity and neutrality. This involves deliberate observational practices where we notice colors, sounds, sensations, and thoughts exactly as they appear without judgment or interpretation. In Patanjali's system, cultivating pratyaksha counteracts the habitual biases that cloud perception. By training the mind to observe without overlay, we develop what modern psychology calls metacognition—awareness of our thinking process itself. This practice reveals how biases operate in real-time and creates the psychological space needed to choose different responses rather than automatically reacting from conditioned patterns.
