Why It Matters

Samadhi, often translated as liberation or enlightenment, more practically represents equanimity—a state where emotions arise and pass without disturbing inner stability. Patanjali positions samadhi as the ultimate goal of yoga, achieved after consistent practice of meditation, breath work, and ethical discipline. In terms of emotional regulation, samadhi represents not emotional suppression but emotional transcendence: emotions occur naturally, but they no longer control consciousness. A person in samadhi experiences grief when loss occurs, but the grief doesn't spiral into despair; they feel joy at good news without grasping or attachment. This state mirrors what modern psychology calls "psychological flexibility." Samadhi reveals that true emotional mastery isn't about eliminating difficult emotions but about achieving stable awareness that isn't identified with emotional content. Achieving full samadhi requires years of dedicated practice, but its principles become operational at earlier stages. Each meditation session that witnesses emotional thoughts without becoming them moves toward this state. Samadhi represents the evolutionary possibility: that humans can transcend being overwhelmed by emotions while remaining fully alive and responsive. It's the integration of emotional experience with unshakeable inner peace.
