Samadhi: The State of Internal Harmony and Integration

Patanjali's samadhi—the state of unified consciousness—is the ultimate goal of IFS: all parts in cooperative relationship, held in Self-compassion and coherence.

Why It Matters

Samadhi, the eighth and final limb of Patanjali's yoga, represents the state of complete absorption and unified consciousness—beyond the fluctuation of individual parts. While full samadhi is a meditative achievement, it mirrors the goal of Internal Family Systems: the internal family at peace, all parts honored and cooperative, led by Self. In IFS, this appears as coherence—when all your parts feel heard, their protective roles are appreciated rather than resisted, and they operate in harmony toward your well-being. Patanjali teaches that samadhi emerges naturally when obstacles (kleshas) are removed and the mind becomes still and unified. Similarly, when parts release their burdens and trust Self-leadership, an internal samadhi emerges: you feel less fragmented, more whole, more authentically yourself. This isn't about parts disappearing but about them finding their right relationship within the system. Patanjali's samadhi framework elevates IFS from symptom management to profound transformation toward unity consciousness and integrated wholeness.
