Samadhi: Unified Presence With Partner

The state of complete absorption and unity that represents the ultimate secure attachment—total presence without self-consciousness or fear.

Why It Matters

Samadhi, the eighth and ultimate limb of yoga, is the state of undivided attention, complete absorption, and unified consciousness. In attachment terms, it's the secure attachment ideal: being so fully present with your partner that the anxious questioning (Am I loved? Will they leave?) dissolves entirely. Samadhi in relationship is the moment of complete transparency, where your defended self temporarily relaxes and genuine meeting occurs. It's not perpetual bliss but moments of profound safety where you can be utterly known without fear. Patanjali teaches that samadhi is both the natural fruit of practice and impossible to force. Similarly, moments of true relational unity can't be manufactured through effort; they emerge when both people practice the preceding limbs—ethical living (yama/niyama), physical presence (asana), breath regulation (pranayama), sensory mastery (pratyahara), and focused attention (dharana and dhyana). Attachment security opens the door to these transcendent moments of pure connection.
