Samadhi: Flow State as Secure Relational Connection

Samadhi, unified absorption where subject-object distinction dissolves, describes the secure attachment state of genuine present-moment intimacy without self-consciousness.

Why It Matters

Samadhi, the ultimate state in Patanjali's yoga where the meditator, meditation, and object merge into unified awareness, is remarkably similar to secure attachment's experiential quality. In secure attachment, there's a flow state where you're fully present with your partner without anxiety or self-monitoring. You're not asking "Am I doing this right?" or "Will they leave?" You're simply present, responsive, and connected. This is samadhi in relational form—the dissolution of the anxious observer-self that typically watches the relationship obsessively. Secure individuals move through relationships in this absorbed, non-self-conscious presence. Insecurely attached people often cannot access samadhi because the anxious mind constantly interrupts: "Are they happy with me?" or avoidant defenses prevent genuine merging: "I need distance to be safe." Patanjali's path to samadhi—through pratyahara, dharana (focused attention), and dhyana (sustained focus)—mirrors the path to secure attachment: developing boundary awareness, focusing attention on genuine connection, and sustaining that focus. Samadhi represents the relational goal: intimate presence where the separate self dissolves into genuine togetherness, and security emerges naturally from this unified state.
