Samadhi: Integration and Secure Base Within

The yogic state of integrated awareness mirrors earned secure attachment—developing an internalized sense of safety independent of external validation.

Why It Matters

Samadhi, yoga's highest state, represents complete integration where subject and object dissolve into unified awareness. In attachment terms, this parallels earned security: the internalization of a secure base that is simultaneously independent and relational. Secure attachment is not about finding a perfect external caregiver but developing an integrated internal experience of safety, coherence, and worthiness. Patanjali teaches that samadhi is cultivated through sustained practice of focusing attention and systematically releasing mental obstacles. Similarly, earned secure attachment develops through integrating disowned aspects of self, resolving internal contradictions, and creating coherence across memories, emotions, and beliefs about relationships. This internal samadhi—stable, non-reactive, self-aware—becomes the platform for healthy relating. Rather than desperately seeking external validation or merging with partners to feel complete, the securely attached person relates from wholeness. Patanjali's framework emphasizes that this integration is not mystical but results from disciplined mental work systematizing awareness, processing emotions, and resolving internal conflicts.
