Samadhi: The Unified Self Beyond Part Polarization

The state of integrated consciousness where all parts harmonize under the guidance of the witnessing Self, transcending internal fragmentation.

Why It Matters

Samadhi—absorption into the object of meditation, or integrated unitive consciousness—represents the ultimate goal of both Patanjali's yoga and Internal Family Systems healing. Unlike ordinary consciousness where parts compete for control, samadhi is the state where consciousness is whole, unified, and free from internal polarization. In IFS terms, this mirrors accessing the Self: the healing presence that is curious, calm, compassionate, and connected to all parts without being identified with any single one. Patanjali describes progressive states of samadhi where the sense of separation dissolves and one experiences profound integration. Parts work moves toward this by helping each part trust the Self's leadership, releasing their isolated protective burden. When parts can "see" and trust the larger whole they're part of, their defensive intensity naturally decreases. Samadhi is not the elimination of parts—they remain as functional aspects of psyche—but their alignment under unified awareness. This framework reframes the goal of parts work: not part elimination but part integration into a coherent, Self-led system functioning with wisdom, flexibility, and wholeness.
