Patanjali's samadhi—absorbed, unified consciousness—is the goal state in which all parts are coordinated and transparent to the witnessing Self, with no fragmentation or conflict.
Samadhi, often translated as absorption or enlightenment, represents a state where consciousness is unified, stable, and free from the turbulent fragmentation of competing parts. It is not the annihilation of parts but their integration into a coherent whole where the Self is clearly present and all subsystems operate in transparent coordination rather than hidden agenda or rebellion. In IFS language, samadhi is the endpoint of parts work: each part has been welcomed, its protective role honored and updated, and it now functions as a natural expression of the whole system rather than a protective coalition fighting for control. Patanjali's eight-limbed path (ashtanga) provides the methodical, ethical foundation (yama and niyama) that IFS also recognizes as necessary for sustainable integration. You cannot force samadhi through willpower; it emerges naturally when the conditions of practice, ethical groundedness, and genuine internal dialogue are consistently maintained.
