The ultimate yogic state of unified awareness where all parts are integrated and the Self is clearly present, offering a vision of IFS's healing goal.
Samadhi, the eighth limb of yoga, is the state of unified consciousness where the observer, observation, and observed merge into one. Patanjali describes it as the mind becoming absorbed in the object of meditation, yet simultaneously aware of itself. In Internal Family Systems language, samadhi represents the ultimate healing state: when all parts are unburdened and trust the Self, consciousness becomes unified yet aware of its diversity. There is no conflict, no exile, no relentless protection—only the Self clearly knowing and coordinating all parts. The journey toward samadhi in parts work means progressively unburdening protective parts (allowing them to rest), liberating exiled parts (healing their pain), and strengthening Self-leadership (developing the capacity to hold and coordinate all). Samadhi is not about eliminating parts but about achieving right relationship with them. Patanjali's emphasis on samadhi as natural outcome of progressive practice parallels IFS's trust that integration unfolds when conditions are right. Samadhi offers the aspirational north star for internal healing work.
