Patanjali's samadhi (absorption, integration) describes the ultimate state where parts function in harmony under compassionate Self-leadership.
Samadhi, yoga's highest achievement, is often translated as enlightenment or absorption, but more practically it means complete integration where subject and object are no longer separate, where all elements function as one unified whole. In the context of parts work and IFS, samadhi represents the integrated internal system—not where parts disappear, but where they all serve the whole, trust the Self's leadership, and work together without conflict or hierarchy. This is the natural outcome when every part has been witnessed, understood, unburdened, and restored to its true positive role. Patanjali teaches that samadhi is not achieved through force but through progressive refinement of practice and deepening clarity. Applied to IFS, this means that lasting integration happens as clients continuously practice Self-leadership, listen to each part's concerns, and demonstrate that the system is safe enough for protective parts to relax. When samadhi is reached in parts work, clients report feeling whole, at peace, and capable of genuine choice—the fragmented internal family has become a unified, functional system.
