Samadhi—absorption or unity consciousness—is the ultimate goal where all parts are coordinated in service of the whole Self.
Samadhi is Patanjali's word for the highest state of yoga: a condition of complete absorption where the distinction between observer and observed dissolves, and consciousness rests in its own nature. While this may sound abstract, samadhi is deeply relevant to parts work. In IFS, the goal is not to eliminate or fix parts but to achieve what Richard Schwartz calls 'Self-leadership'—a state where your core Self is present, calm, and in loving relationship with all your parts. This mirrors samadhi: a state of internal unity where all parts are coordinated, none dominant, all working together for the good of the whole. Patanjali teaches that samadhi is not a permanent escape but a profound clarity that becomes available through consistent practice. In parts work, as you dialogue with your parts, release their burdens, and help them find new roles, you notice moments of deep internal peace—when there's no conflict, no competition, just flow. These glimpses of samadhi show you what's possible. The ultimate aim is not transcendence from your parts but their full integration into a coordinated, Self-led system where you move through life with clarity, compassion, and wholeness.
