Samadhi: Integration and the Unified Self

Samadhi, Patanjali's state of unified consciousness, is the ultimate goal of Parts work: all parts organized around the Self, functioning in harmony rather than conflict.

Why It Matters

Samadhi, often translated as enlightenment or absorption, is Patanjali's final stage of yoga—a state where the distinction between knower, knowing, and known dissolves, and consciousness rests in unified wholeness. While this may sound abstract, it has a precise parallel in Internal Family Systems: samadhi is what occurs when all parts have released their extreme roles, when the Self is fully present and leading, and when the internal system functions with natural harmony and coordination. In samadhi, there are no longer 'you' and 'your parts'—there is simply the Self expressing itself through different capacities and perspectives, none of which are distorted by fear or burden. IFS calls this 'Self-leadership.' Patanjali teaches that samadhi is not a distant goal reserved for monks; it is the natural state of consciousness when the afflictions (kleshas) are resolved and the mind becomes clear and unified. In practical terms, this means your parts trust the Self, your protective parts relax their hypervigilance, your exiles feel safe enough to unfold, and you experience genuine freedom, creativity, and connection. This is both the promise and the possibility of rigorous Parts work guided by Patanjali's wisdom.
