Why It Matters

Samadhi, the eighth and culminating limb of Patanjali's path, is a state of complete absorption and non-dual awareness—not the dissolution of parts, but their resting in unified consciousness. Patanjali describes it as a state where the meditator, meditation, and object of meditation become one, and the mind becomes transparent to the true Self. While this may sound abstract, it is profoundly relevant to parts work. The goal of IFS is not to eliminate parts but to achieve a state where the Self is in leadership, parts feel safe and resourced, and there is internal harmony without fusion or conflict. This mirrors samadhi: a state where multiplicity is preserved but held in the spacious awareness of the Self. Parts no longer fight for dominance or act in isolation; instead, they coordinate toward the whole person's wellbeing. Patanjali teaches that samadhi brings freedom from suffering (Yoga Sutras 2.25). In parts work language, this is the resolution of internal polarization, the ending of compulsive reactivity, and the emergence of genuine choice grounded in Self-leadership and unified intention.
