Patanjali's highest state of meditative absorption applied to observing parts with the Self's compassionate, non-judgmental presence.
Samadhi, Patanjali's ultimate goal—a state of unified consciousness where observer and observed merge in non-dual awareness—may seem abstract, but it illuminates the deepest work in parts therapy. When you achieve samadhi in relation to a part, you're touching the state where the Self witnesses the part's protective efforts with complete understanding and compassion, with no separation, judgment, or agenda to change it. In IFS language, this is the Self in its purest expression: curious, compassionate, calm, and clear. Patanjali teaches that samadhi isn't escapist but profoundly clarifying—in this state, you see exactly what a part needs and how it's been serving you. A part that seemed threatening when approached with fear appears vulnerable and well-intentioned when witnessed in samadhi. This state cannot be forced; it emerges through consistent practice of the other yoga limbs, including your parts work. When you sit with a part that initially triggered defensiveness, and gradually access genuine compassion for its burden, you're approaching samadhi—the marriage of observer and observed in love. This state dissolves the adversarial dynamic often present in parts work, replacing it with integration rooted in understanding.
