Samapatti and Mathematical Translation

Patanjali describes samapatti—a state where the meditator's consciousness becomes one with the object of meditation. The boundary dissolves; subject and object merge in unified perception. Mathematical thinking manifests this principle through symbolic translation: when diverse phenomena translate into identical mathematical structures, apparent separateness reveals underlying unity. A vibrating string, an oscillating pendulum, and alternating electrical current appear completely different experientially, yet mathematics shows all three as sinusoidal functions—identical patterns in different domains. Consciousness 'blends' with the mathematical object, recognizing its presence across apparently unrelated contexts. This is mathematics' deepest power: the capacity to dissolve apparent separation and reveal fundamental coherence. Patanjali teaches that samapatti is not escape from multiplicity but transparent perception of unity within multiplicity. Mathematical thinking functions identically: it doesn't erase diversity but recognizes the singular mathematical logic manifesting across infinite variations. Mathematical thinking as universal language becomes possible precisely through this principle—when we recognize that beneath linguistic, cultural, and phenomenological diversity lies mathematical structure common to all human experience. By understanding samapatti, we grasp mathematics not as imposed system but as revelation of truth unifying all existence.
