Samprajnata and Asamprajnata Samadhi: Integration Stages

Patanjali's two stages of absorption illuminate the progression from conscious dialogue with parts toward seamless internal coordination and wholeness.

Why It Matters

Patanjali describes samprajnata samadhi (conscious absorption) and asamprajnata samadhi (non-conscious absorption), representing deepening stages of unified awareness. In Parts work, this mirrors the healing progression. Samprajnata samadhi reflects the IFS phase of active dialogue: you are consciously aware of parts, maintaining distinction while building relationship. The Self intentionally engages with protectors, exiles, and managers, bringing awareness and choice to internal dynamics. This phase requires effort and attention. Asamprajnata samadhi reflects the later phase where parts have integrated so fully that the distinction dissolves into natural, effortless coordination. You no longer need to consciously negotiate; the internal system moves as one. This progression is not linear; you may move between stages depending on triggers and stress. Patanjali's framework normalizes both conscious work and eventual non-conscious integration, preventing practitioners from believing they must maintain perpetual awareness or control. The goal is not endless vigilance but the eventual dissolution of internal conflict into organic wholeness where parts serve the Self's vision without strain.
