Samsara: The Cycle of Relational Reactivity

Samsara describes the endless cycle of suffering caused by unconscious reactivity; in attachment, insecure patterns create self-perpetuating cycles of relational pain and avoidance.

Why It Matters

Samsara, the cyclical nature of suffering in existence, perfectly describes how insecure attachment perpetuates itself. An anxiously attached person triggers avoidant partners, whose withdrawal triggers panic, reinforcing the original anxiety—a self-fulfilling prophecy loop. An avoidantly attached person pushes away closeness, confirming their belief that intimacy is suffocating. These patterns operate as samsara—cyclical, automatic, and self-reinforcing without conscious intervention. Patanjali teaches that samsara continues as long as you remain unconscious of the pattern. The moment awareness enters, the cycle loses its automatic power. In attachment work, recognizing samsara means seeing how your relational patterns automatically recreate the wounds they're designed to protect. An anxiously attached person raised by an emotionally unavailable parent unconsciously selects unavailable partners, recreating the original abandonment. Breaking samsara requires recognizing the cycle, understanding its origins, and consciously choosing different responses. Through this awareness, the automatic reactivity loses power, and genuine relational choice becomes possible.
