Samskara: Mental Grooves and Behavioral Pattern Work

Patanjali's concept of samskaras as deep mental grooves formed by repetition—the target of DBT chain analysis and skill repetition.

Why It Matters

Samskaras are mental impressions or grooves created by repeated thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. They operate below conscious awareness, automatically triggering familiar emotional and behavioral responses. A dysregulated person with samskaras of shame, fear, or rage will spontaneously activate these patterns under stress. Patanjali teaches that samskaras form through repetition and can only be reshaped through repeated contrary practice. This is DBT's core mechanism: chain analysis identifies the samskaras (the automatic links between triggers and dysregulated responses), while skills practice creates new grooves (healthier automatic responses). Understanding emotional dysregulation as samskara-driven removes moral blame—the person isn't "bad," their neural grooves simply run deep. However, Patanjali's philosophy emphasizes personal responsibility: only deliberate practice creates new samskaras. DBT's homework, behavioral experiments, and skill coaching directly address samskara reformation. Clients who understand that their patterns are learned grooves (not permanent traits) gain hope that new patterns can be excavated through sustained practice.
