Patanjali's concept of samskaras explains how repeated experiences and traumas create distinct protective parts with embedded patterns.
Samskaras are subtle impressions or grooves in consciousness created by repeated actions, thoughts, and experiences—essentially psychological conditioning imprinted at a deep level. This yogic concept directly illuminates part formation in IFS. Trauma, repetitive patterns, and significant life experiences carve samskaras that crystallize into distinct internal parts with their own beliefs, protective strategies, and autonomous responses. A child repeatedly criticized develops a Critic part carrying that samskara. Neglect creates an Exile part holding the imprint of unmet need. Patanjali's genius is recognizing these imprints as real but not permanent: the same practices that settle mental fluctuations can gradually wear away limiting samskaras through consistent spiritual practice and conscious awareness. In IFS terms, this means parts aren't fixed identities but patterns that can transform through witnessing, dialogue, and emotional healing. Understanding your parts as samskaras—powerful conditioning patterns rather than permanent truths—creates the openness necessary for genuine transformation and release.
