Sankalpa: Intention-Setting for Sustained Direction

This yoga concept of heartfelt intention provides ADHD individuals a method to clarify purpose and align actions with values beyond moment-to-moment impulse.

Why It Matters

Sankalpa is a solemn resolve or intention—not a goal, but a deep declaration of direction rooted in your innermost values. ADHD minds often struggle with the gap between values and actions: wanting to be present with family but getting distracted, intending to work but context-switching constantly. Patanjali teaches that the mind follows the intentions we establish. A sankalpa operates differently than a to-do list; it's a North Star that helps redirect attention when distraction pulls you off course. For ADHD individuals, establishing a clear sankalpa—perhaps 'I move through my day with intentional presence'—provides an internal anchor. When distraction arises, returning to this stated intention helps the person choose their attention rather than be controlled by impulse. Sankalpa leverages the ADHD mind's capacity for hyperfocus when engaged by something meaningful, channeling that intensity toward what truly matters rather than what merely grabs attention.
