Sattva, Rajas, Tamas and Mental Constitution

The three mental qualities determine psychological patterns and guide personalized Ayurvedic mental health interventions.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras recognize sattvic (pure), rajasic (active), and tamasic (inert) qualities as fundamental mental states. Ayurveda incorporates this framework to classify mental constitutions and disorders. A naturally sattvic person enjoys clarity, compassion, and mental stability; rajasic types experience restlessness and anxiety (often vata-pitta imbalance); tamasic individuals struggle with depression and lethargy (typically kapha vitiation). Rather than treating all anxiety identically, an Ayurvedic practitioner assesses whether symptoms arise from rajasic overstimulation requiring cooling practices, or tamasic stagnation requiring stimulating herbs and movement. Increasing sattva becomes the therapeutic goal through sattvic diet, lifestyle, meditation, and relationships. This framework explains why identical treatments fail for different people—individual mental constitutions require specific paths to balance and transformation.
