The cultivation of mental clarity, harmony, and equilibrium as the optimal emotional-psychological state.
In Yogic philosophy, Sattva is one of three Gunas (qualities): the quality of harmony, clarity, and equilibrium. The other Gunas are Rajas (agitation, passion, activity) and Tamas (inertia, dullness, heaviness). Emotional regulation in Patanjali's framework means cultivating Sattvic qualities—clarity of perception, emotional stability, and harmonious responsiveness. Rajas generates emotional turbulence, restlessness, and reactive intensity. Tamas creates emotional numbness, depression, and reactive suppression. Sattva is neither suppression nor indulgence but clear-seeing and wise action. Interestingly, Sattva is cultivated partly through external choices—diet, environment, company—and partly through mental practice. This integrated approach recognizes that emotional regulation involves lifestyle choices, not just meditation. A Sattvic emotional state is characterized by resilience, adaptability, compassion, and clear perception of reality. Cultivating Sattva prevents both emotional volatility and emotional flatness, creating the optimal conditions for sustainable emotional wellbeing and genuine psychological transformation.
